Online CSD Curriculum Sample
The Online Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders program consists of 62 credits through the portfolio option, or 66 credits through the thesis option. The program also contains one virtual orientation, which begins before you start your courses, and one campus immersion, which takes place in summer or January, depending on your start date.

What is involved with clinical experiences?
The speech-language pathology clinical experiences are designed to provide you with real-world, hands-on experience to complement your classroom learning. These off-campus experiences in practice settings near your home enrich your graduate experience by preparing you for action in the field in a variety of settings.

How does the clinical placement process work?
Our placement team will collaborate with you to secure quality practicum sites. Our staff ensures all experiences meet accreditation standards and that your sites and clinical educators are approved prior to the start of your practicum work.

How far will I need to travel for clinical placements?
Our placement team will work one-on-one with you to navigate the clinical placement process, striving to place you in placements close to your preferred locations. In geographic regions with limited placement options, you may need to travel 125 miles each way to meet clinical training requirements across the breadth and depth of clinical practice.

How do I prepare for speech-language pathology clinicals?
You’ll work with and remain in close communication with your placement team throughout your program. This team will help you stay on track with deadlines and your clinicals checklist.

The Online CSD is a Master’s level degree designed to train students looking to enter the field as a Speech-Language Pathologist, preparing them for national certification. These professionals are licensed practitioners who identify, assess and treat pediatric and adult clients with speech, language, cognitive and swallowing disorders.
The online CSD program is 8 semesters, or 2.7 years. It consists of 62 credits through the portfolio option or 66 credits through the thesis option, including 400 clinical hours.

The distance pathway for the Master of Science (M.S.) program in Communication Sciences and Disorders at Elmhurst University is under review by the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association.
Some states require a separate credential to practice in the school system which may have additional requirements beyond professional level speech-language licensure in the state. If a state Department of Education requires a separate credential to practice in the school system, you must obtain that credential to practice in schools.
Elmhurst online M.S. CSD graduates have two options to obtain the SLP Professional Educator License (PEL) in Illinois:
Option 1:
- Successfully pass the course “Teaching Learners with Exceptionality” which can be completed on campus at Elmhurst or at a community college. This allows students to complete their post-graduate fellowship in a school setting prior to obtaining their CCC.
- Pass the ILTS 232 test
- 150 hours of supervised, school-based professional experience
Option 2:
- Apply for Illinois teacher certification after they obtain their CCC from ASHA.
It is the student's responsibility to determine what is required to obtain the credential to work in school systems outside of Illinois. It is the student’s responsibility to remain up to date on all state licensure requirements for professional SLP licensure as well as teacher certification.
